Keto Hot Fudge Sauce from Scratch
If you live in a warm climate like I do (can you say "feels like 105 degrees every day!), then you are well aware that certain sugar-free chocolate companies like ChocZero will not mail you any type of chocolate without charging you an arm and a leg for expedited shipping.
Now I get it - companies do not want to be responsible for their chocolate melting before it arrives at your home.
That's where this keto hot fudge sauce from scratch comes into play! Simple ingredients that you can find at any grocery store, some sugar substitute, and a little bit of time, and you can make this keto chocolate fudge sauce all summer long!
Homemade Keto Chocolate Sauce Ingredients
There are 7 ingredients in this hot fudge sauce recipe and I’m breaking down each one for you here. You can find the full printable recipe in the recipe card at the end of this post. Let’s take a quick look at what you’ll need:
- Butter – I use unsalted butter so that I can adjust the amount of saltiness in the chocolate fudge. The butter gives this sauce richness and shininess as well as flavour.
- Chocolate – You will need unsweetened chocolate like Baker's or 100% Cacao by Ghiradelli.
- Milk – You will need a combination of heavy cream as well as unsweetened almond milk.
- Sweetener – I use allulose for this recipe as I like the fact that there is no cooling effect. However, you can always use monk fruit liquid extract and add just enough drops to suit the level of sweetness that you are looking for. I do not suggest erythritol as it will crystalize when the sugar-free chocolate fudge sauce is stored in the fridge.
- Cocoa powder – I LOVE black cocoa powder but you can use any type of unsweetened cocoa powder.
- vanilla extract and salt
Instructions for making Keto Fudge Sauce from Scratch
Making keto hot fudge sauce from scratch could not be any easier!

In a small bowl, stir together the cocoa powder, allulose, salt, and heavy cream until no clumps remain. Set the bowl to the side.

In a small saucepan, combine the remaining 1 cup of allulose, butter, and milk. Simmer on medium-low for about 3 minutes or until the sweetener dissolves and the butter has melted.

Turn the temperature down to low and whisk in the cocoa mixture. Cook on low for about 2-3 minutes or until all the ingredients are incorporated. Remove the pan from the heat and add the unsweetened chocolate and vanilla.

Allow the mixture to sit for about 5 minutes before stirring to melt the chocolate. Taste the keto chocolate fudge sauce and add additional sweetener to suit your taste.
Hint: Make sure that you keep the temperature on medium-low and do not allow the mixture to come to a boil as the chocolate will seize and the milk will curdle.

Keto Hot Fudge FAQs
What’s the difference between hot fudge and chocolate sauce?
The main difference is the texture. Hot fudge is thicker and more rich while chocolate sauce is thinner and more pourable. Chocolate sauce stays sauce in the refrigerator, while hot fudge gets cold and thick…like fudge.
Can this sugar-free hot fudge be made in advance?
Yes! In fact, when we’re having summer parties, they almost always include an ice cream bar. I like to make up a batch of this hot fudge recipe, some strawberry sauce, and caramel sauce the week before to serve at the party. This sauce is good in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 weeks.
How do I reheat the sauce?
Remove the desired amount of refrigerated hot fudge and place in a microwave safe container. Heat in 15 second increments at 50% power until warm and pourable.
Does this sauce have to be served warm?
Yes because when cold, the hot fudge sauce is super thick and definitely not pourable. As the hot fudge hits the cold ice cream or any other type of cold keto dessert, it thickens and sets up.
