Sugar-free Trifle Ingredients by the Layers
The ingredients come together quickly! Just bake your favourite keto chocolate cake and then once it is chopped into chunks, this keto chocolate trifle is ready to be assembled!
- Keto Chocolate Cake: I used my Keto Chocolate Cake Recipe but you can use any leftover keto cake or your favourite recipe. Make sure you make the cake ahead of time so that it has time to completely cool before assembling.
- Chocolate Drizzle: the chocolate drizzle layer is made by simply heating some heavy cream with some sugar-free chocolate chips.
- Caramel Drizzle: I used my Keto Microwave Caramel Sauce that only takes 8 minutes to make using the microwave! You will want to make the caramel sauce at least 30 minutes ahead of time to allow the sauce to cool
- Whipped Cream Layer: we’re throwing together a homemade sugar-free whip made up of heavy whipping cream, powdered sweetener, cream cheese and vanilla extract. Adding some cream cheese to the whipped cream helps to stabilize the whipping cream, ensuring that it does not break down too quickly!
- Optional Toppings: get creative! I love crushed keto cookies, crushed Keto Candied Nuts, or more sugar-free chocolate sauce or chocolate shavings.

Chocolate Trifle in 7 simple steps:
This gluten-free chocolate trifle comes together in 7 easy steps.

Cut the cake into cubes. You can use a cake mix for the cake, or make it from scratch, just be sure that the cake mix is large enough to fit a 9×13” pan as you will need that much cake to form the 2 layers.

Make the chocolate and caramel sauce. Prepare the chocolate sauce by melting together the sugar-free chocolate and heavy cream. Use premade keto caramel sauce or follow my Easy Keto Microwave Caramel Sauce recipe

Beat the whipping cream. Place the softened cream cheese and sweetener in a bowl and whip until smooth. Add the whipping cream to the bowl and beat with electric beaters for 1-2 minutes. Continue beating until stiff peaks form.

Assemble trifle: Layer ½ of your cake cubes in the bottom of the trifle dish. Drizzle some sugar-free chocolate and caramel sauce over the cake. Add ½ of the whipped cream mixture. Repeat one more time. Add more chocolate drizzle, caramel sauce, or chocolate cake crumbs to the top.

Hint: Make sure that your cake, caramel, and chocolate sauce are at room temperature and not hot. If the sauces or cake are still warm, they will cause the whipped cream layer to melt!
Keto Trifle Substitutions
Want to save yourself even more time? Here is a list of ingredients that you can actually buy instead of making!
- Chocolate Sauce - Lakanto has a chocolate syrup that is pretty good but I prefer ChocZero's Hot Fudge sauce.
- Caramel Sauce - Both ChocZero and Lakanto have caramel syrup. Both are ok but since they are "syrup" and not "sauce" they have a much thinner texture and not as a rich flavour as homemade sugar-free caramel sauce.
- Whip Cream - There are now several sugar-free whipped cream on the market. My two favourites are Sugar-Free Cool Whip and Keto TruWhip. You will most likely need two containers in order to make this recipe.
Trifle Variations
One of my favourite things about making trifles is that they are so easy to customize!
- Double Chocolate - add unsweetened cocoa powder to the whipped cream topping for a double chocolate keto trifle.
- Peanut butter - melt some peanut butter, sweetener, and heavy cream together to form a peanut butter drizzle
- Crunchy - add some crushed leftover keto cookies, chopped nuts, or some keto cereal to add a crunchy layer to this keto chocolate trifle.
Equipment for the Sugar-free Trifle
All you need to make this recipe is a 9 x 13-inch cake pan for baking the keto chocolate cake, a large mixing bowl for your whipped cream and a trifle bowl for assembling the gluten-free chocolate trifle.
Don't have a trifle bowl? No worries! You can use any bowl or even make a single-layer trifle using a 9 x 13-inch baking dish.
You can even make individual servings and use wine glasses or mason jars!

Storing and Freezing:
To Store: Store the chocolate trifle covered, in the refrigerator for 1-2 days.
To Freeze: There are a couple of options for freezing this chocolate trifle.
- Freeze the baked cake and chocolate pudding until ready to use. Allow thawing completely before assembling the trifle.
- Make the trifle in a smaller Tupperware or casserole dish and freeze the entire trifle, covered tightly for up to 2 months.
Top tip
This sugar-free trifle is best if made at least 2 hours ahead of time. Although the whipped cream layer will slowly start to break down by day 3, we still really enjoyed this trifle for 5 days (it just didn't look as good so Mr. Grumble's ended up calling it "Keto Chocolate Smash"!!)
Trifle is a layered dessert that usually includes cake, pudding, and whipping cream in different varieties.
This chocolate trifle is ideally made ahead of time. It’s actually best to make it several hours or 1 day ahead of time. You can also make the pudding and chocolate cake 2-3 days ahead of time and store them in the fridge until ready to use.

Whisk, being careful as the mixture will bubble profusely, and return to the microwave for 2 more minutes.
- Stir in salt, vanilla, and baking soda and stir to incorporate (be CAREFUL as the mixture will bubble violently once again) and allow the caramel to cool. The mixture will thicken as it cools.
Prepare the Chocolate Sauce:
- In a large glass measuring cup, add 1 cup sugar-free chocolate chips with 1 cup heavy cream. Place in the microwave and microwave on high for 1 minute. Set the sugar-free chocolate sauce to the side to cool to room temperature.
Prepare the Whipped Cream:

Assemble the Keto Chocolate Trifle:
- Place half of the cake pieces in the bottom of the trifle bowl. Drizzle ⅓ cup of the chocolate sauce and ⅓ cup of the caramel sauce over the cake. Spread ½ of the whipped cream over the cake layer. Repeat by adding the remaining cake followed by the chocolate and caramel drizzle. Spread the remaining ½ of the whipped cream and drizzle any remaining chocolate or caramel over the top.
- Place in the fridge for at least 2 hours before serving.
