Cracking the Code: My Personal Guide to the Egg Fast Diet
Let’s be honest—when the scale won’t budge and your keto results start to plateau, it’s easy to get frustrated. That’s exactly where I found myself a few months ago. I was eating clean, tracking my macros, and still… nothing. Then a friend casually dropped, “Have you tried an egg fast?” Say what?
At first, I laughed. Just eggs? But after doing a little digging—and giving it a shot myself—I was shocked at how effective this quirky little reset could be. If you’re curious (or desperate like I was), here’s a full rundown of how the egg fast diet works, what the rules are, and how it helped me get back on track.
What Is an Egg Fast?
The egg fast is a short-term, low-carb, high-fat keto “reset” designed to jumpstart fat loss and get you back into deep ketosis quickly. It’s typically done for 3 to 5 days and centers around—you guessed it—eggs.
It’s not meant to be a long-term diet, but it can be a powerful tool when used strategically. It’s also surprisingly filling and simple, which is perfect when you’re tired of overthinking every bite.
The 5 Basic Egg Fast Rules
These are the golden rules I followed (and you should too for best results):
- Eat at least 6 eggs per day
Eggs are the core of this plan. Most people eat between 6–10 eggs daily. They provide protein, healthy fat, and essential nutrients—all in one shell. - Eat 1 tablespoon of healthy fat per egg
This includes butter, coconut oil, MCT oil, or full-fat mayonnaise. So if you eat 6 eggs, you’ll need 6 tablespoons of fat spread throughout the day. This keeps you full and in fat-burning mode. - Eat 1 ounce of full-fat cheese per egg (optional)
You can include up to 1 oz of cheese per egg if tolerated. Stick to low-carb cheeses like cheddar, mozzarella, or cream cheese. (Tip: Cheese can stall weight loss for some, so feel free to skip it if that’s your situation.) - Eat every 3 to 5 hours, even if you're not hungry
This is something that although it is in the "original" rule book, I will honestly say that I do not follow this rule. I still like to eat most of my meals in a 4 hour eating window so feel free to eat whenever you want! - Stop eating 3 hours before bedtime
Give your body time to digest before sleep. This helps insulin levels drop and improves fat-burning overnight.

Bonus Guidelines I Found Helpful
- Drink lots of water – At least half your body weight in ounces per day.
- Black coffee and tea are allowed – Just skip the cream and sweeteners (unless you’re using a clean zero-carb one).
- Supplements help – I took magnesium and electrolytes to avoid headaches or keto flu symptoms.
- Track your results – I lost 5 pounds in 4 days (most of it water, but my belly looked way flatter).
What to Expect
You might feel a little off on Day 1 or 2—kind of like starting keto all over again. I had a mild headache and some fatigue, but by Day 3, I was zipping around with crazy energy and zero bloat.
Most people report reduced cravings, tighter tummy, and clearer skin (bonus!). But the best part? It snapped me back into full-on ketosis, which gave me the momentum to return to my regular low-carb eating with a fresh perspective.
🧠 Final Thoughts
The egg fast is not a magic bullet, but it’s a solid reset tool—especially when your body feels stuck. It’s not meant to be fun, gourmet, or social. It’s meant to be simple, effective, and short-term. And in that role, it absolutely delivers.
If you’re keto, stalled, and feeling blah—crack some eggs, melt some butter, and see what a few focused days can do for you. Just make sure you have access to a bathroom (hello, digestion reset 😅), and don’t stray far from your salt shaker!
Now...One to my experiment!

Egg Fast Day #1
Since I spent the latter part of the week, as well as part of the weekend, in Orlando at a seminar, I had a lot of catching up to do to get ready for the egg fast. This quick and easy Egg Fast Buffalo Wing Dip was delicious and came together in minutes!
One of the hardest things that you hear people say while on the egg fast is that they get pretty sick and tired of eating eggs.
Well, I am determined not to write a single word that resembles or refers to boredom during this egg fast.
Each day, I will post an update on my progress as well as post an "egg fast" friendly recipe.
The great thing about eggs is that they can be pretty much turned into anything. Neutral in flavour, you can add spices to create any food flavour you are craving.
If I can say one thing about myself, it is that I have crazy ideas (hence the name "My Crash Test Life") when it comes to recipes and things to try.
So, while I was bored in my hotel room, I decided to come up with a "plan of attack" for getting through this egg fast and ending it still loving eggs.
With that being said, I knew I had to come up with a variety of flavours to keep my palate interested.
What I absolutely loved about it was that I had certain parameters that I needed to work with.
The main egg fast rule is that for every 1 egg, you eat 1 tablespoon of fat and up to 1 oz of cheese.
To keep things simple enough, I decided to create a couple of easy, pack-able meals that could be taken to work as well as some "oven" meals to be made at home.
So, how did Day #1 go?
It was a breeze!
I started my day with a nice 5.5-mile run and then got some things done around the house.
Since I typically practice time restricted eating (ie. I eat in a 4 hour window or follow OMAD), I ate between the hours of 11 a.m-3 p.m. Tomorrow, my window will most likely be between 4-8 pm depending on work.

Here are the totals for today's egg fast:
Eggs - 8
Fats - 8 tablespoons
Cheese - 4 oz
Since I am already metabolically flexible, it was really easy to go without any carbs. I had no side effects today and honestly, my GI/stomach has never felt better!
Now, I bring you my Egg Fast Buffalo Wing Dip!
Easy to make and a perfect ratio of eggs to fats to cheese, this recipe also tasted great!
I made 3 servings so that I could have them during the week. I made some quick Super Easy Parmesan Cracker Crisps using 0.2 oz of cheese for each cracker. Then, I simply added some chili spice to the cracker to give them a spicy twist.

How to Make Egg Fast Buffalo Dip
This recipe only requires you to literally dump everything in a food processor and turn it on! That's it!

If you do not have a food processor, you can use a handheld mixer instead.
Modifications for a Fat Fast Recipe
This recipe can easily be converted into a fat fast recipe. Simply decrease the hard-boiled eggs in half (ie - use 3 eggs) and double the cream cheese and mayo. Voila! This egg fast Buffalo dip was converted into a fat fast recipe containing over 81% fat.
