How often do you make a mistake and it ends up being the best mistake you could have ever made? I have a tendency to make A LOT of mistakes, especially when I am cooking. Ask Mr. Grumbles to tell you some stories and I am sure he could give you a plethora of examples of my mistakes!
This mistake, however, was a definite blessing in disguise.
I absolutely love hard-boiled eggs. The things you can make with them are limitless...egg salad, deviled eggs, chopped eggs on top of a salad....I could go on and on!
The problem that I have with hard-boiled eggs is the difficulty in peeling the shell off the egg. I have tried EVERY contraption on the market (including the "Negg") as well as all types of recipes and to no avail. Time and time again, I get frustrated trying to pick off every piece of broken egg shell off the egg.
Until the day I made a mistake!
I have a PowerXL Air fryer and the recipe booklet that it came with has a recipe for hard boiled eggs. Here is the recipe:
- Set air fryer to 260 degrees F. Add the eggs to the fryer basket and cook 15 minutes for hard-boiled eggs. Remove the eggs and plunge them into an ice bath. Peel when cool enough to handle.
- For soft-boiled eggs, cook them 10 minutes. For medium-boiled eggs cook for 12 minutes.
Since I couldn't decide what type of eggs I wanted, I decided to go with lucky "13" and set the timer for 13 minutes. The great thing with the air fryer is you can easily walk away. The bad thing with the air fryer is that you can easily walk away and forget that you have something in the air fryer!
And that is exactly what happened so 1 hour later, I realized that I had completely forgotten about my eggs! I though for sure I was doomed. We all know that it is imperative that the eggs go into a ice cold water bath, right?
Wrong!
I decided to crack my eggs and see what happened after not putting them in water and discovered the most amazing thing...my eggs peeled BEAUTIFULLY!
Seriously, I have never in my hard-boiled egg cracking days ever had such ease peeling the shell off the egg. For whatever reason, the membrane that coats the egg white separated off with great ease. The picture below depicts the large chunks of shell that came off.
As for the texture of the egg, perfectly cooked!
If you have an air fryer, try this recipe today and let me know if my mistake was the best blessing in disguise!

I looked it up and the T-Fal is set at 338 degrees F. You may want to start with just 1 egg for 8 minutes to start. If that doesn't work, try 10. Let me know!

Will have to try on my TFal air fryer - cannot set temp with this machine.
