Keto Cheddar Tart
I know that American Thanksgiving is quite a ways away, but Canadian Thanksgiving is just around the corner.
Does Canada celebrate Thanksgiving?
That is the question I get from my patients here in the States.
Believe it or not, Canada was the first country to celebrate Thanksgiving. The celebration was a feast that was enjoyed by the pilgrims. The only difference between the two is the date. Canada celebrates Thanksgiving on the 2nd Monday in October.
WHAT?
I know this may come to Americans as a shock but when you really think about the symbolism associated with Thanksgiving (ie. fall leaves, pumpkins and squashes), October makes much more sense than the end of November.
So, how did Americans get their Thanksgiving date? As it turns out, President Lincoln declared the date to be the 4th Thursday in November. Random as it was, the date has stuck ever since.
Another tradition that is Canadian-based (due to the British influence in Canada) is to combine apples with cheddar cheese.
Salty, sweet and perfect as a light appetizer, this Apple Cheddar Chive Tart is SOOOOOO easy to make and will surely impress your guests!
Keto Cheddar Apple Tart Ingredients
Making this keto apple tart is very simple and only requires a handful of ingredients.
- Almond flour - I use super-fine almond flour recipe.
- Flaxseed - You will need ground flaxseed. You can grind whole flaxseeds in a coffee grinder if you do not have any ground flaxseed
- Egg - The egg does NOT need to be at room temperature
- Butter - Unsalted and softened butter work best
- Sweetener - Any sweetener will work. Just remember that if you use allulose, your keto cheddar apple tart will darken quicker than if you use any other type of keto sweetener
- Apple - You can use 4-6 oz of sliced or diced apple in this recipe. The more apples you use, the more apple flavour but you will also add more carbs.
- Cheese - I used a combination of sharp cheddar and blue cheese. I do NOT suggest buying shredded cheese in a package as it typically contains anti-caking additives and does not melt as well.
- Sour Cream - You can replace this with Greek Yogurt if you wish.
- Salt, Cardamon, and Dried Chives - Feel free to change the spices to suit your taste.
Keto Cheddar Tart Instructions
Making this easy keto fall dish could not be any simpler.
Step 1 - Prepare the Crust
First, preheat your oven to 350 degrees F. and grease a rectangular tart pan well with non-stick spray. If you don't have a rectangular tart pan, feel free to use any shaped pan that you may have.
Next, in a small bowl, combine the crust ingredients and beat until fully incorporated. Press the crust into the tart pan wetting your fingertips as necessary to press the crust firmly in the pan. Poke holes using a fork all over the crust and place in the oven for 10 minutes.
If you do not want to make your own crust and do not have any sensitivities to gluten, you could replace this homemade crust with some puffed pastry.
Step 2 - Prepare the toppings
While the crust is baking, thinly slice 1 apple and set it aside.
When the crust is done baking, remove it from the oven and spread the yogurt over the crust. Sprinkle the chives and cardamon over the crust. Layer the apple slices over the crust and top with grated cheddar cheese.
Step 3- Bake
Return to the oven and bake for 20 minutes or until the cheese has softened. Slice the tart and enjoy!
