Why this recipe works
Here is why you are going to keep wanting to make this Homemade Keto Espresso Nutella:
- Easy - This recipe comes together all in a food processor with very limited hands on time.
- Short Ingredient List - Only needing hazelnuts, oil, sweetener and cocoa powder, this sugar-free nutella does not require a laundry list of ingredients.
- Taste - Perfectly balanced with just the right amount of sweetness, cocoa powder, and espresso powder - you will think you have died and gone to heaven after licking a spoonful of this delightful keto chocolate hazelnut spread.
- Texture - Ultra-creamy, this keto Nutella spread is just as smooth as any other version available on the market.
Sugar-Free Nutella Ingredients
You only need 4 basic ingredients to make this amazing keto nutella recipe.
- Hazelnuts - I buy my hazelnuts already skinned which makes it really easy to make this homemade keto nutella recipe. See the FAQ section if you need to remove the skin from your hazelnuts.
- Palm Shortening - Unlike coconut oil, palm shortening is super creamy at room temperature. You could substitute coconut oil but the mixture may be not as creamy.
- Cocoa Powder - I am in LOVE with black cocoa powder so I used a combination of black and regular cocoa powder. Make sure that you use a high quality cocoa powder such as Droste, Modern Mountain or Ghiradelli for the best flavour.
- Sweetener - I have made this recipe using only granular sweetener as well as a combination of powdered sweetener as well as liquid Tapioca Fiber Syrup. For the creamiest keto chocolate hazelnut spread, use a combination of liquid and granular. However, just using granular sweetener will still taste amazingly good, just not quite as creamy.
- Espresso Powder - I have used both Espresso Powder as well as instant coffee in this recipe. If you use instant coffee, you will need to heat the palm shortening in order to properly dissolve the instant coffee.

Variations
This keto chocolate spread recipe is so easy, you will be making it over and over again! Here are some additional variations for slight twists to this spread.
- Double Chocolate - stir in some sugar-free chocolate chips once the sugar-free Nutella has cooled for a double delicious chocolate spread
- Peanut Butter - allow the keto chocolate hazelnut spread to cool and swirl in some melted peanut butter
- Almonds - use almonds instead of hazelnuts!
See this Keto 4-Ingredient White Chocolate Hazelnut Spread for a vanilla version.
Storage
Store this sugar-free hazelnut spread in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 weeks or in the fridge for over 1 month.
You can also freeze smaller portions for up to 3 months.
Can I make this without adding the espresso?
If you don't think your family will like the espresso, divide the Nutella and stir half the espresso powder into only half of the Nutella.
Can you buy peeled hazelnuts?
I buy peeled hazelnuts online from Sam's club. They cost just under $10 for 737 grams!
How do you peel hazelnuts
To remove the hazelnut skins, imply roast them in the oven at 300 degrees F for about 10-15 minutes. Remove them from the oven and let them cool slightly or until they can be handled. Take a clean dish towel and rub the nuts gently until the skin peels off.
Can I use a different keto sweetener?
Feel free to replace the allulose with a powdered sweetener such as Swerve Confectioner.
How can I make this Keto Nutella Recipe thicker?
You can add more palm shortening to thicken the Nutella. To thin the keto Nutella, simply add a little melted coconut oil.
Can I decrease the calories by adding almond milk?
Yes...and no. If you want to add some almond milk, only do so after you have removed the homemade keto espresso Nutella using a spoon. IF you process almond milk at a high speed with the other ingredients, the Nutella will clump together in a large bowl.
Can I add liquid keto sweeteners, such as Tapioca Fiber syrup?
Once again, you can gently stir in tapioca fiber syrup but do not add it to the ingredients at high speed. The mixture will separate.
Is this considered a Fat Fast recipe?
Yes! This recipe is 90% fat and can therefore fit into a fat fast.

- ¼ cup palm shortening
- ½ cup cocoa powder, unsweetened
- ¼-½ cup allulose, or other sweetener of choice
- 1 tsp salt
- ½ tsp vanilla
- 1 tbsp espresso (optional)
Instructions
- Add the nuts to a large saucepan and roast at medium speed until they begin to turn golden brown. Remove immediately from heat (nuts can burn quickly!)
- Add the nuts to a food processor and process until a smooth consistency.

- I was able to buy Hazelnuts that had already had the skin removed. I got mine at Trader Joe's but if you buy the ones with the outer skin still on, simply roast them in the oven at 300 degrees F for about 10-15 minutes. Remove them from the oven and let them cool slightly or until they can be handled. Take a clean dish towel and rub the nuts gently until the skin peels off.
- Feel free to replace the allulose with a different keto sweetener. Adjust the quantity to suit your tastes.
- If you use an erythritol-based sweetener and store this recipe in the fridge, it will have a slight granular texture.
