This delicious and easy Blueberry Greek Yogurt Tart is one of my all-time favourite desserts. Not too sweet and so easy to make, this graham cracker tart is filled with a slightly sweet greek yogurt and blueberries.
Have you ever heard of Mustikkappirakka? Can you even say it?;-)
Recently, I had a patient in my office from Finland. I asked her what her favourite Finnish dessert was and she replied "Mustikkappirakka".
I thought she was pulling my leg but when I questioned her with regards to the ingredients, she replied that it was a simple combination of bilberries (not blueberries) and a sour cream type mixture.
Curiosity got me and I decided to look deeper into this traditional dish.
What are bilberries?
The name bilberry appears to have a Scandinavian origin, possibly from as early as 1577, being similar to the Danish word bølle for whortleberry with the addition of “berry”. The bilberry is also known by a number of other English names including blaeberry in Scotland and the whortleberry in southern England.
Bilberries – which are native to Europe – are different from North American blueberries, although the species are closely related and belong to the same genus, Vaccinium.
Bilberries grow singly or in pairs rather than in clusters, as blueberries do, and blueberries have more evergreen leaves. Bilberries are dark in colour and usually, appear near black with a slight shade of purple. Bilberries are more intensely flavoured than blueberries, but they are softer and juicier than blueberries making them difficult to transport.
Since I can not seem to find these precious little gems anywhere in the States, I decided an easy conversion would be blueberries.
As for the rest of the tart, I decided to try and healthier version and replaced the crust with a gluten-free version and swapped out the sour cream or creme fraiche with 0% plain Greek Yogurt.
The result?
A-M-A-Z-I-N-G!!!
Mildly sweet with a hint of citrus from the cardamon spice, this ridiculously easy tart has quickly become one of my favourite recipes.
Since there is only Mr. Grumbles and myself eating this tart, I decided to put half of it in the freezer. When I went to pull it out to enjoy a slice, I simply placed it in the microwave for 30 seconds and was completely amazed at how well it reheated!
Substitutions for my Blueberry Greek Yogurt Tart
Almond Flour: Feel free to replace this with crushed graham crackers in the same amount but make sure that you omit the added sugar as well as the cinnamon
Greek Yogurt: You could try sour cream or creme fraiche
Cardamon: I HIGHLY suggest that you do not omit this spice as it adds a wonderful depth to the dish. However, if you can not find it at your local store, simply replace it with more cinnamon or nutmeg.
How to make Blueberry Greek Yogurt Tart:
Step 1: Prepare the crust
Simply follow my tart crust recipe and set aside.
Step 2: Prepare the filling
While the crust is baking, combine all the filling ingredients, except for the blueberries, in a medium-size mixing bowl. Whisk everything together and set aside. When the crust is done baking, place the blueberries on top of the crust and pour the filling over the berries.
Step 3: Bake the tart
Place the tart in a 375 degree preheated oven for 25-30 minutes or until the center is set. Allow the tart to cool for at least 1 hour. Serve the tart slightly warm with a dollop of whipping cream.
