How cool are these onion decorations?
I mean seriously, this little pops of green, all tightly curled up are sure to impress your guests and family alike.
The best part, they are so easy to make!
I had originally posted the directions in my Kung Pao Chicken recipe but decided that since I will be referring back to these cute little curls, that they deserved their own short and sweet post!
How to make curled onions
Take your green or spring onions and make sure they are nice and clean.
Cut the onions into 3-4 inch sections. Next, with the tip of a sharp knife, cut down the center of the green part of the onion. Don't worry if you aren't perfectly in the center as we will be slicing them again.
Place the onion sections in a bowl of ice water and let them sit for about 5 minutes.
At the 5 minute mark, most of the onions will not have curled but instead, they will have opened up. Remove the onions from the water and once again, slice down the centre of the onion. Place them back in the water for another 3-5 minutes.
At this point, you should have a bowl full of curled onions!
The neat part is that these onions will stay curled until they get heated so you can easily make these ahead of time, store them in the fridge and then simply add them to your dish right before serving!
What type of onions can you use?
Scallions (also called green onions) or spring onions can be used. Just make sure that you are only using the green section of the onion. According to the Kitchn website, there is often confusion about whether or not green onions and spring onions are the same things. This might stem from the fact that green onions are called spring onions in other countries, such as Canada and the United Kingdom.
