This is an easy salmon dinner idea the whole family will love. Even Mr. Grumbles, who is by no means a salmon fan, LOVED it. I did have to first trick him and omit the fact that it was salmon before he took his first bite. Before he realized it was salmon, he was already sold on the delicious Asian flavour!
I’ve been eating tons of salmon lately. It is hands down my favourite fish to eat. It’s mild and super easy to prepare. Tender flakey salmon topped with a sweet and tangy teriyaki sauce! What’s not to love?! And if you are looking for what to do with any salmon leftovers, check out my 3-Ingredient Keto Salmon Salad recipe.
This teriyaki glazed salmon is the perfect keto weeknight dinner when you are short on time but want something amazing. The sauce can even be made a day or two ahead of time and kept in the refrigerator until you are ready to cook.
The salmon gets marinated in a simple teriyaki sauce then pan-fried. The sauce compliments the salmon perfectly and is sweet, tangy, and thick. Half of the sauce gets reserved for marinating and the other half for glazing the salmon during cooking.
How to make Teriyaki Sauce
Making your own Teriyaki Sauce at home is super easy! It’s also a great way to control the sweetness and saltiness of the sauce. To make your own teriyaki salmon marinade at home you’ll need:
- Soy sauce: I always use low sodium soy sauce. You can use regular soy sauce with a splash of water to combat some of the saltiness.
- Ginger: To make things super easy, I use pregrated ginger that you buy in the grocery store. If you perfer, you can alwasy use fresh grated ginger.
- Garlic: I love adding garlic to my homemade teriyaki sauce. You can substitute garlic powder if you do not have fresh.
- Brown sugar substitute : Since teriyaki sauce is definitely on the slightly sweeter side, you have to add some type of sweetener. If you don't have any brown sugar substitute, you can always use liquid allulose instead. Feel free to adjust the amount of sweetener to suit your tastes
- Rice wine vinegar: This vinegar can be found in the International or Asian isle in the grocery store. It adds the perfect acidity to the sauce.
- Sesame oil: Adds a wonderfully nutty flavor to this sauce!
- Xantham gum: This is optional and is added at the very end to help thicken up the sauce.
Ingredients for Teriyaki Salmon:
- Salmon - I use fresh caught salmon. You can buy frozen salmon and just allow it to thaw before making this recipe. Also, try to find salmon pieces that are similar in thickness to allow for even cooking
- Red Chili - This is an optional ingredient but it does add a nice bit of heat to the dish. You can always use any hot sauce instead
- Sesame Seeds - Adding sesame seeds to the dish not only makes this dish aesthetically pleasing but also adds a little texture to the meal.
- Spring onion - This ingredient is optional but adds a splash of colour to the dish!
How to Make the Teriyaki Salmon:
- Cut the salmon into bite-size cubes and set them to the side aside
- Prepare the marinade by mixing the teriyaki marinade ingredients together.
- Mix the salmon into the marinade, cover, and marinate for 15-30 minutes.
- In a large pan with a little oil, pour in the marinade and sesame seeds.
- Mix together the sauce until it starts to bubble and gets thicker/saucier
- Add the salmon and fry for a couple of minutes on each side.
- If the sauce seems too thin, sprinkle about ⅛ teaspoon of xantham gum over the liquid and whisk it into the sauce
- Take the skillet off the heat and garnish with more sesame seeds, spring onion and sliced red chilli,
- Enjoy!
