I absolutely love pickled foods.
What I don't care for is the number of additives in most pickled goods.
From red and yellow dye to high fructose corn syrup, finding additive-free pickled foods is not easy to come by.
That's why I created this easy and delicious Homemade Pickling Spice recipe.

- whole bay leaves

Where can I find these spices?
Believe it or not, these spices are really easy to find. Check out your local grocery store or Walmart. I was able to get the Badia brand in small bags so I did not have to buy an entire jar.
Also, check out stores like Lucky's and Sprouts markets as they often have "spice stations" where you can buy only the quantity of spice you need.
Why should I make Homemade Pickling Spices when I can just buy it at the store?
Although you can buy pickling spices already made, you must realize that as time goes on, spices lose their flavours.
So exactly how long do spices last?
As a general rule, whole spices will stay fresh for about 4 years, ground spices for about 2 to 3 years and dried herbs for 1 to 3 years.
The more important question is how long has the store-bought pickling spice actually been on the store shelves? Without really knowing this answer, you can not truly tell if you are getting the most flavour from the actual combination of spices
