I LOVE BARBECUE! Although I was born in Canada, I think I somehow have some southern blood in me!
Barbecue is by FAR my favorite food. With barbecue, you have the ability to take the exact same cut of meat and create a million variations.
Now, onto the BIG problem that I have with barbecue.
Most of the rubs and sauces contain A LOT of sugar. It is very difficult to find a rub that does not contain over ½ a cup of brown sugar. As for the barbecue sauce, ketchup, brown sugar and honey are usually the key ingredients. Since we all know that I believe that refined sugar has NO place in the definition of "optimal nutrition", I knew I had to come up with my own recipe.
My goal was to come up with a sauce that was not only Whole30 approved, but also low in carbs and high in healthy fats.
Low and behold, the White BBQ sauce was born!
Ingredients
Comprising of homemade mayo, a touch of mustard and some seasonings, I was able to create a sauce that will stand up to any chicken, pork or beef based barbecue.
This sauce is more tangy in nature and does not contain any tomatoes. Because of this, it most resembles a distant cousin used in Carolina style barbecue. In order to add a lightness and slight sweetness to the sauce, I decided to add a touch of Coconut Aminos.
You may be wondering what exactly are Coconut Aminos? Coconut aminos are created from the "sap" of coconut palms. After collecting the sap, it is fermented and then blended with sea salt. It has a similar taste to soy sauce and is best described as a salty-sweet condiment with a buttery finish. This should be a staple in everyone's pantry especially if you are trying to cut back on soy.
Try this sauce on the crispy crock pot pork shoulder recipe or even try it as a dressing on a salad. The versatility of this recipe will definitely guarantee that it will be made over and over again!
