Delicious Whole30 Toad in the Hole recipe combines sausage surrounded in a low carb, gluten-free, Paleo and Keto Yorkshire type pudding crust for the perfect quick and easy dinner.
Have you guys heard of the television show "Call the Midwife"?
If not, "Call the Midwife" is a BBC period drama series about a group of nurse midwives working in the East End of London in the late 1950s and early 1960s.
What does this have to do with a recipe?
Well, on one episode, they sit down to a dinner called "Toad in a Hole". Since I had never heard of such a dish, I decided to look it up and see what this infamous British dish was all about.
Where did the name "Toad-in-the-Hole" originate?
According to The Culture Trip, Toad-in-the-Hole originates from the town of Alnmouth in Northumberland, where the local golf course was overrun with Natterjack toads. During a golf tournament, a golfer putted his ball only for it to leap back out before an angry toad raised its head, peering out of the hole that it had been sleeping in. The chef at the hotel the golfers were staying in devised a dish to resemble this humorous moment, baking sausages in the batter to appear like toads poking their heads out of the golf holes –and thus Toad-in-the-Hole was born!
Curiosity got me and I decided to recreate a gluten-free, low carb and Whole30 approved version of this recipe.
How to make Whole30 Toad in the Hole
Step 1:
- In a high-speed blender, add in the eggs, egg whites, milk, vinegar, mustard and almond flour.
- Turn it on high for 1 minute. Set mixture to the side.
Step 2:
- Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F.
- Chop a ¼ of red onion and set aside.
- In an ovenproof skillet, add 1 teaspoon avocado oil.
- Take the sausage and place it in the ovenproof skillet along with the chopped red onion.
- Place skillet in the oven for 10 minutes, turning the sausage every so often to fully cook the sausage.
Step 3:
- Once the sausage has cooked, remove the skillet from the heat and add 1 additional tablespoon of avocado oil. Pour the batter over the skillet and sausage.
- Place the skillet in the oven and bake for 20 minutes.
- Serve immediately.
Technically speaking, Toad-in-a-Hole is served with gravy. You can find my Whole30 approved gravy here. I always have extra gravy that I store in the freezer but feel free to omit the gravy and use mustard instead.

Thanks for catching that! There is 2 tsp mustard and 1 tsp vinegar.

This sounds good and will probably try it. However, step 2 includes vinegar and mustard as ingredients, but neither is in the ingredient list. What are the quantities for those?
Thanks

My mother learned how to make Yorkshire pudding from her mother-in-law who grew up and lived in Yorkshire. I have her recipe. This is a great keto friendly substitute. Thank you!
