Are you a Pinterest fan? I am. I love that I can type anything I want to search for and the brilliant platform pulls up all the images that I could possibly desire. Travel, food, fitness and fashion are only a few of the numerous subjects you can find on Pinterest.
If it weren't for Pinterest, I never would have discovered "Life Hacks".
Here is the definition of Life Hacks: Life hack refers to any trick, shortcut, skill, or novelty method that increases productivity and efficiency, in all walks of life.
On the website 1000lifehacks.com they literally have 1000 tips and ideas. Here are some of my favourites:
#996 states that potatoes should be mashed using warm milk only. Using cold milk will cause potatoes to turn grey. (Who knew?!)
#2536 states that putting yellow mustard on a burn and then rinsing it with cold water is like a magic eraser for your burns (I need to try that since I am constantly burning my forearms when I reach into the oven!)
#306 states that if you put a hot spoon on a mosquito bite, the heat will destroy the reaction and stop the itchiness (I'll try that one this summer!)
I could go on forever and plan on slowly testing out these tips, but let me get back to today's post and recipe.
The Recipe
Have you ever heard of "Millionaire's Bacon"? Millionaire's Bacon is simply candied bacon. Coating the bacon with either sugar or maple syrup, creates a caramelization effect that is out of this world! Salty and sweet and an easy treat, I decided to try and create a sugar free version of this bacon recipe.
Most sugar free versions use erythtitol as the sugar alcohol, but for whatever reason, erythritol (also sold as Swerve) seems to create a lot of digestive upset for me. Therefore, I decided to attempt using Stevia instead to see what would happen.
Back to the Life Hacks.
Fact #854 states that if you run bacon under cold water, it will reduce the shrinking by up to 50%.
I decided to see if this was "fact or fiction"
I took my bacon out of the refrigerator and ran half of my slices under cold water and did not to do so to the other half.

The bacon on the diagonal on the left was run under cold water. The bacon on the right was not. I placed the entire pan in the oven at 400 degrees for 20 minutes.
And the verdict is.....
FACT!
The bacon that was run under cold water (on the left) did not shrink as much as the bacon that was not run under water (on the right).
Although I did not take measurements, I think a more accurate statement would be that running bacon under cold water reduces shrinking by about 20 %.
Now, on to the recipe!
Step 1: Take about 1 tablespoon of sweetener and set aside.
Step 2: Run your bacon under cold water. Do not dry.
Step 3: Sprinkle each piece of bacon with sweetener and repeat on the other side. Place the bacon on wired rack and cook in the oven for 15-20 minutes.
Step 4: ENJOY!
Other sweeteners you could use are pure maple syrup, sugar or honey if you are not insulin sensitive. Also, for a little added kick, you could add a pinch of cayenne pepper and cinnamon.
