Although I try to eat as clean as possible and love doing so, there are some foods that I can say I miss.
One such food is Nacho Cheese Doritos.
Do you remember the commercials on that use to be on the radio and television?
"Nacho Cheese Flavored Doritos Tortilla Chips are the universal language of awesome. Combine Doritos tooth-rattling crunch with the bold flavour of nacho cheese, and you've got an unstoppable delicious snack. Grab a bag and stock up on the bold taste of Doritos Nacho Cheese Tortilla Chips"
Is your mouth watering yet?!
So, why don't I just eat some Doritos and put myself out of misery?
Have you looked at their ingredient list?
- Corn, Vegetable Oil (Corn, Canola, And/or Sunflower Oil), Maltodextrin (Made From Corn), Salt, Cheddar Cheese (Milk, Cheese Cultures, Salt, Enzymes), Whey, Monosodium Glutamate, Buttermilk, Romano Cheese (Part-skim Cow's Milk, Cheese Cultures, Salt, Enzymes), Whey Protein Concentrate, Onion Powder, Corn Flour, Natural And Artificial Flavor, Dextrose, Tomato Powder, Lactose, Spices, Artificial Color (Yellow 6, Yellow 5, And Red 40), Lactic Acid, Citric Acid, Sugar, Garlic Powder, Skim Milk, Red And Green Bell Pepper Powder, Disodium Inosinate, And Disodium Guanylate.
Let me explain what some of these ingredients are and why you too should stay away from them.
Top 3 Harmful Dorito Ingredients:
1. Maltodextrin
- is a white powder made from corn, rice, potato starch, or wheat.
- it’s highly processed
- it is closely related to corn syrup solids
- high on the glycemic index (GI), meaning that it can cause a spike in your blood sugar
- it is a preservative that increases the shelf life of packaged foods.
- According to a 2012 study, maltodextrin can change your gut bacteria composition in a way that makes you more susceptible to disease
- It can suppress the growth of probiotics in your digestive system, which are important for immune system function.
- it can also increase the growth of bacteria such as E. coli, which is associated with autoimmune disorders like Crohn’s disease.
2. Artificial colours Yellow 6, Yellow 5, And Red 40
- have been linked to hyperactivity in preschool and school-aged children
- the Food Standards Agency of the European Union (EU) deemed these unsafe for children
- researchers found that although this food colouring wasn’t immediately toxic to white blood cells, it did damage the DNA, causing the cell to mutate over time
3. Monosodium Glutamate, Disodium Inosinate, And Disodium Guanylate
- these have recently been very controversial ingredients as some studies are showing that they are not harmful
- however, reports of an increase in headaches, asthma and allergic reactions have been reported
Please note that I have no intention of scaring you in to not ever eating Doritos again.
I just feel that it is important as a consumer that we make informed decisions and not be too easily influenced by high dollar marketing!
What ingredients do you need to make this Keto Nacho Cheese Seasoning?
- Romano cheese
- Onion powder
- Tomato Powder
- Garlic Powder
- Chili Powder
- Salt
What is Tomato Powder?
Tomato powder is exactly what it sounds like.
Simply taking dehydrated tomatoes and grinding them into a powder form is all it takes to make tomato powder.
Although I have not tried it myself, I did find a recipe by The Things We'll Make using 8lbs of tomatoes and a dehydrator.
On sale, I may be able to get organic tomatoes for about $3-$4/ lb. So, 8 lbs of organic tomatoes will run $24 - $32!!!
Keeping this in mind, I did a little digging and found that Frontier makes and sells an organic tomato powder for around $16.50 / lb.
Now I realize that that is a large price to pay for seasoning; However, when you think about a tiny 1 oz jar of most organic seasoning costing between $3- $5, it is actually a steal!
Besides, I am so sure that you are going to love this mix so much that you won't even care what you had to spend!

Romano Cheese - replace with Parmesan cheese
