This delicious and easy 5-Spice Ginger Pulled pork is easy to make. In a crockpot, Instapot or oven, this easy and tasty dish is keto-friendly and requires very little effort.
I was scrolling through some of my Mum's Style at Home magazines recently when I came across a recipe a 5-Spice Ginger Pulled Pork.
It looked simple enough but I had a couple of issues with the recipe.
What was wrong with the recipe?
First of all, it called for 1.5 cups of freshly squeezed orange juice. I don't know about you guys but I don't have the time to squeeze oranges. Also, I personally don't care for the taste or the amount of sugar in orange juice.
Second of all, the recipe was cooked in the oven for 6-8 hours. There is anything wrong with that except for the fact that most people can not be home for that amount of time. Also, since we are still hitting record-breaking temperatures in Florida, I did not want to turn my oven on for that amount of time.
So, I decided to modify the recipe and came up with a lower carb and easier version to make this delicious 5-Spice Ginger Pulled Pork.
What ingredients do I need to make this pulled pork?
- 4 lbs pork loin (or pork butt)
- 1 can ginger beer (or other pop)
- 1 onion
- ginger
- garlic
- maple syrup
- coconut aminos (or soy sauce)
- Chinese 5-Spice seasoning
How do I make this dish?
- chop an onion and place it on the bottom of the dish
- pour ginger beer over onions
- divide pork into equal sections
- combine spices with maple syrup and coconut aminos
- rub mixture over pork and place pork fat cap on in a pot
- roast and enjoy!
What method can I use to make this recipe?
Oven - place all the ingredients in a roasting pan that can be fitting with a lid. Place in the oven at 450 degrees for 30 minutes then drop the temperature to 265 degrees F. and continue to cook for an additional 6-8 hours, basting every so often
Slow Cooker - Place all the ingredients in a slow cooker and set on high for 4 hours or on low for 8 hours
Pressure Cooker - Place all the ingredients in the pressure cooker ( I have the Ninja 6.5 quart All-in-One). Pressure cook for 40-50 minutes at 390 degrees F.
Can I make this into sliced pork instead?
Absolutely! Just cook in the oven for 6 hours, the slow cooker for 3 hours and a pressure cooker for 40 minutes. Reducing cooking time helps hold the meat together making it perfect for slicing.
What can I do if I have too much liquid leftover?
Simply remove the lid from your cooking method and allow the liquid to boil off. Or, you can pull the meat out and pour any excess liquid out of the dish. Lastly, remove some of the liquid and place it in a small bowl. Add 1 teaspoon of arrowroot (or cornstarch) and whisk. Once the mixture in the bowl has thickened, add it to the pork and stir it in. Continue to cook the pork while stirring and the liquid will thicken.
How do you serve this pork?
- serve it over a salad for a nice lunch or dinner
- serve it with a side of rice or riced cauliflower
- serve it on a bun (I just became affiliated with Smart Baking Company...I LOVE their products which have limited ingredients, are gluten-free, non-GMO, keto and low in calories. If you use the coupon code "Cat" when you check out, you will save 10% on your order!)
- add it to your morning eggs
How do you make this pork crispy?
When you are ready to serve this dish, simply heat a frying pan on medium-high. When the pan is hot, place the pork in the pan and press the pork down. Due to turn pork over or stir pork for 3-5 minutes. Flip the pork over and crisp the other side.
