This 4 Ingredient Cannoli Dip is absolutely divine! Simple ingredients are combined to form this easy and yet oh so delicious dip. Gluten-free, sugar-free and keto-friendly!
Here is yet another post that starts with a confession...I am not Italian and I have never had a cannoli. There, I said it! However, since I am always looking for a challenge, this French Canadian girl decided to try her hand at what most would consider, an Italian favourite.
Research on Cannoli
From doing some digging on the web, I came across the website, Mazatlan My City
According to this website,
Cannoli have been traced to the Arabs during the Emirate of Sicily, with a possible origin for the word and recipe deriving directly from qanawāt. These were deep fried dough tubes filled with various sweets, which were a popular pastry across the Islamic world at the time, from Al - Andalus to Iraq and including Sicily. Cannoli come from the Palermo and Messina areas and were historically prepared as a treat during Carnevale season, possibly as a fertility symbol; one legend assigns their origin to the harem of Caltanissetta. The dessert eventually became a year-round staple throughout Italy.
A fertility symbol?!! Shocking, right?
Filled with ricotta cheese that has been sweetened, the filling seemed simple enough so I set out to attempt a "low carb" version of this treat. As for the "shell", I have ideas dancing around in my head but, like I always try to tell myself, "Baby steps":-)
So, instead of jumping in with 2 feet and making a "cannolo" (Yes, the spelling is correct...the singular form of cannoli is cannolo!), I decided to create a "dip" that you could serve with sliced strawberries, slather it on some 5 Minute Whole30 Crepes (Keto, Low Carb, GF) or scoop it up with some broken up waffle cones .
How to make 4 Ingredient Cannoli Dip
Step 1:
- In order for this dip to remain thick and creamy, you need to remove most of the water.
- Since I don't own any cheesecloth, I decided to use my nut milk bag instead. Time-consuming, yes...Difficult, no!
Note to self: Purchase some cheesecloth!
Step 2:
- Place the strained ricotta in a food processor. Now, you can probably eliminate this step but I wanted my mixture to be ridiculously creamy so this was a must for me. You could probably use a hand-held mixer. If you try it with a hand-held mixer, make sure you let me know how it goes.
- Next, add in the stevia, a pinch of salt, a dash of brown sugar (or sweetener of choice) and a smidgen of vanilla and process it until it is fully combined.
Step 3:
- Finally, all you have to do is stir in the chocolate chips.
Seriously, that's it!
Thick, creamy and dreamy, this 4 ingredient cannoli dip is a perfect summer dessert.
Serve this dip with broken up waffle cones, graham crackers or sliced strawberries. Also, you could spread it on some 5 Minute Whole30 Crepes (Keto, Low Carb, GF) for a delicious, breakfast treat!

Cannoli Dip (Keto, Low Carb)
In a matter of minutes using only 4 ingredients, sugar-free, low carb and keto friendly cannoli dip can be created. Easy and delicious!
- Total Time: 5 minutes
- Yield: 16 serving 1x
Ingredients
- 32 oz whole milk ricotta, strained
- 1 cup powdered sugar (I use Swerve Confectioner for a sugar free version)
- ½-1 tablespoon vanilla (adjust it to your likings)
- 1 tsp salt
- ¼ cup chocolate chips (I use Lily's Sugar-Free)
- 1 tbsp brown sugar (can omit)
Instructions
- Place the strained ricotta in a food processor. Process until smooth. Add all other ingredients, except for chocolate chips, and continue to process until fully combined.
- Place mixture in a large bowl and stir in chocolate chips.
Notes
- I liked the added depth that brown sugar gave to this recipe. I probably would not have added if I was to use it as a filling as the fried pastry has plenty of sugar in it.
- You should be able to use a hand-held mixer if you do not have a food processor.
- Serve this dip with sliced strawberries, Whole30 Crepes, broken waffle cones or graham crackers.
- See above post for ricotta straining directions.
