This Whole30 Chili Dog Casserole is a great way to get your family to eat a healthy meal without even realizing it! Ground meat and cut up hot dogs are combined in this casserole for a hearty and delicious dinner.
I think it has been over a month since my last confession so I thought it was time for another one.
Truth is, I have never had a chili dog in my life. We definitely had hot dogs as kids but adding chili to a hot dog was a foreign concept in Canada.
Where did the Chili Dog originate?
Like many foods, there seem to be many who claim to have invented the chili dog. Also, it seems like the actual definition of "chili dog" varies from state to state. In West Virginia, chili dogs come topped with chopped coleslaw. They come char-grilled at Ted’s in Buffalo. Chili dogs can be had at Tigers, Reds, or Astros games. Artisan versions are on offer in Portland and San Francisco. In the span of about a hundred years, America turned a German sausage into a hot dog and turned Mexican chili con carne and Greek saltsa kimainto chili, and then repackaged the whole thing as a cheap, distinctly American dish.
Therefore, the diversity of the American population is what truly created what is known today as the chili dog.
Since I am not a gluten eater, I knew I had to create a recipe that would lend itself to the flavour of the chili dog while trying to make it as healthy as possible.
How to make Whole30 Chili Dog Casserole
Step 1:
- Preheat oven to 400 degrees F.
- Grease a 9 x 11 baking dish and set aside.
- Heat a large skillet on medium heat.
- Add chopped hot dog (I use Applegate hot dogs which are Whole30 approved) and cook until starting to brown.
- Remove hot dogs and set aside.
- Add in ground meat (I used lean ground turkey) and cook for about 5 minutes.
- Add onions to the skillet and continue to cook.
- Once onions soften and begin to brown, add garlic and stir together all ingredients in skillet.
Step 2:
- Add the tomato sauce, diced tomatoes, chili seasoning, salt, coconut aminos and nutritional yeast to the skillet
- Continue to cook on medium heat for an additional 5 minutes.
- Remove skillet from heat and let cool slightly.
- If you want your dish to have the same texture as canned chili, take your mixture and place it in a high-speed blender. Blend for 30 seconds and return the mixture to the skillet.
Step 3:
- Add cooked hot dog, egg and coconut flour to the skillet and stir to make sure that everything is very well incorporated.
- Once the mixture is well combined, pour it into a 9 x 11 baking dish and bake for 30 minutes.
- Once it has cooked, add some diced raw onion or chives over the top.
- Depending on your nutritional goals, you can always add some cheese to the top of the dish.
- Also, I have made this dish and stirred in a bag of riced cauliflower with the egg and coconut flour.

- Total Time: 50 minutes
- Yield: 10 servings 1x
Ingredients
- 1 lb lean ground turkey (or other lean ground meat)
- 6 hot dogs
- 1 small onion, diced
- 15 oz pasta sauce
- 15 oz diced tomatoes
- ¼ cup nutritional yeast
- 2 garlic cloves, minced
- 2.5 tbsp chili powder
- 1 tbsp coconut aminos
- 1 tsp salt
- ½ cup coconut flour
- 2 eggs
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Generously grease a 9x13 baking dish and set aside.
- In a large skillet, cook sliced hot dog until starting to brown. Remove from heat and set aside. In the same skillet, cook ground meat on medium high. After about 3 minutes, add onion and continue to cook until onion begins to soften (approximately 5 more minutes). Add garlic and cook 1 more minute.
- Next, add tomato sauce, diced tomatoes, chili seasoning, salt, coconut aminos and nutritional yeast to the skillet. Continue to cook on medium heat for an additional 5 minutes. Remove skillet from heat and let cool slightly. At this point, you can add the mixture to a high speed blender to get the same texture as canned chili.
- Once the mixture has cooled, add cooked hot dog, egg and coconut flour and stir to combine. Add cheese if using.
- Pour mixture into the baking dish and spread mixture evenly. Place in the oven for 30 minutes. At the very end, place casserole under the broiler on high for 1 minute to brown the top.
Notes
- If you want to get the same texture as canned chili, take the cooked meat and onion mixture and add it to a high-speed blender. Add tomato sauce and diced tomatoes and turn on high for 30 seconds.
If you are not on the Whole30:
- you can use soy sauce instead of coconut aminos
- you can add 1 - 2 cups of shredded cheddar cheese and omit the nutritional yeast
