Ok...I am going to completely stereotype the South.
Please, all Southerner's, know that I live among you and cherish your upbringing so this "stereotyping" is purely coming from an angle of pure admiration!
Ok, here we go...
When I think of the South, I envision BBQs on expansive lawns, serving coleslaw, brisket, collard greens and okra.
Why okra you ask?
Probably because until I moved to the South, I had never really seen it in the grocery stores. Down here in Florida, you can find it raw, frozen, breaded and pickled!
See, my "stereotyping" wasn't all that bad, was it.
So, where am I going with this? Well, I recently had a hankering for chili.
Yes...it is over 90 degrees down here but I am a girl who knows want she wants and goes after it until she gets it!
Now, the only hurdle was convincing Mr. Grumbles to eat the chili. You see, Mr. Grumbles works outside all day long whereas I see my patients in an air-conditioned office.
Coyly, I broached the subject...it went something like this:
Me - "Hey, what do you think about some BBQ brisket this week for dinner?"
Mr. Grumbles - "Sounds good to me."
Et voila! I had "permission" to make chili!
Ok...so maybe I was reading a little between the lines but I figured if I made a BBQ chili brisket, I might be able to satisfy my selfish chili craving.
Next, I had to incorporate my stereotyping of Southern BBQ into my recipe so I added collards, okra and barbecue sauce to my standard chili ingredients.
Weird...yes but it absolutely worked!
Mr. Grumbles came home stating how good the house smelled. When he looked in the pot, he didn't say a word about it being chili...I think the delicious aromas had made him "grumble-free". I silently and nervously watched as he got a bowl, served himself a nice helping of chili, sat down and finished the entire bowl and returned for seconds!
What's the moral of the story?
Find out what you want and manipulate your way until you get it!!!:-)

- Total Time: 4 hours 5 minutes
- Yield: 8 bowls 1x
Ingredients
- 2 lbs beef brisket, cut into 4 chunks
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 1 white onion, chopped
- 6 cloves of garlic, minced
- 15 oz frozen sliced okra
- 10 oz shredded cabbage (I use a bag of prepackaged coleslaw)
- 15 oz tomato sauce
- 12 oz BBQ sauce
- 10 oz diced tomatoes with green chilis
- 2 cups chopped kale (or any other green such as spinach)
- 1 tbsp chili powder
- 1 tsp cumin
- 1 tsp dried mustard powder
- 1 cup beef broth (or any other flavour)
Instructions
- In a large skillet and olive oil and heat on medium-high heat, add onions. Cook until starting to become translucent (about 5 minutes) and add garlic, stirring until fragrant (about 1 minute). Remove from heat and add to the slowcooker.
- Add all remaining ingredients to the slowcooker. Stir to fully incorporate ingredients and turn on high for 4 hours or on low for 8 hours.
- When chili has been cooked, carefully, using 2 forks, shred brisket. Since the meat has been cooking for quite some time, it should be easy to shred. If not, remove meat from slow cooker and place on a cutting board and slice meat into small sections.
- Serve with a dollop of coconut cream, sour cream or greek yogurt.
Notes
- Although I have not tried it yet, pork tenderloin or chicken could replace the brisket.
