Sugar-Free Cookie Dough
I have a confession to make. Sometimes, well if we are being honest, every weekend, I make a batch of keto cupcakes just for an excuse to eat frosting!
I have seriously justified my actions as "healthy" because A: I am using an uber-high delicious fiber muffin and B: the secret ingredient in this recipe is protein powder! Yup...that is all it takes for me to justify my "healthified" keto treat.
Why this Keto Frosting is SO GOOD
I honestly can say that this keto cookie dough frosting is one of the BEST sugar-free frostings you will ever make!
- Made with real butter for a rich and creamy flavour
- Comes together in under 5 minutes
- Whipped to fluffy perfection
- The most versatile frosting you can make. Enjoy it between layers of my Keto Almond Flour Sponge Cake, slather it on some of these awesome cupcakes, or even eat it by the spoonful like my Keto Edible Cookie Dough

Ingredient Notes
Protein Powder - I have made this high protein frosting recipe using two different types of protein powder and both turned out absolutely delicious. My favourite and easiest-to-find pea protein powder is Orgain. I used the vanilla flavour but you can use any flavour you want. I also recently found a low-carb Cookie Dough Protein Powder by Apollo. A scoop of this brand of protein powder contains only 2 grams of net carbs but it does contain flour (due to little chunks of cookie bits scattered throughout the protein powder) so do not buy this brand if you want to keep this keto frosting gluten-free.
Butter and Peanut Butter - Since I am a certified peanut butter freak, I used a combination of butter and peanut butter. However, if you do not want your cookie dough to have a mild peanut butter flavour, simply replace the peanut butter with more butter.
Sweetener - I used a combination of Allulose and Brown Sugar Substitute. The allulose dissolves very easily which adds the necessary sweetness. The brown sugar substitute contains erythritol which does not blend in as well. These little crunchy crystals mimic the same texture that you get when you eat raw cookie dough. Instead of using regular brown sugar, I used Lakanto Golden but you can also use Swerve Brown instead.
Salt and Baking Soda - Even though this cookie dough is meant to be enjoyed raw (unbaked), adding baking soda, adds a hint of flavour that makes it taste more like regular cookie dough. If you don’t have it on hand, you can leave the baking soda out.
Sugar-Free Chocolate Chips - You can use either dark chocolate, milk chocolate or white chocolate chips in this recipe. My favourite brands are either Lily's or ChocZero. You can also chop up a sugar-free chocolate bar and use it instead.
Vanilla extract - If you can, try to use real vanilla extract, as opposed to imitation flavouring but if you are in a pinch, you can use imitation vanilla. You can even make your own vanilla extract at home for an even richer flavour.
High Protein Frosting Recipe Instructions
This recipe comes together in under 5 minutes. The longest part of this recipe is allowing the butter to soften. Seriously, that is the hardest step!
Step 1: Combine the butter, peanut butter and protein powder

Step 2: Add the powdered sweetener, vanilla, salt and baking soda

Step 3: Taste and add additional brown sugar substitute

Step 4: Fold in the sugar-free chocolate chips

Serving Suggestions
The beautiful thing about this keto cookie dough frosting (besides how AMAZING it tastes!) is that it complements so many other flavours.
Once this frosting recipe is in your repertoire you’ll want to put it on everything in site!
- Cake - Add it to a classic almond sponge cake for a quick and easy keto dessert
- Swiss Roll Cake - Take this high protein frosting and fill this Keto Banana Swiss Roll Cake with it for a high protein and super healthy breakfast idea that your kids will love!
- Cookies - Spread a thick layer of keto cookie dough frosting on your Easy Keto Monster Cookies then add a few keto funfetti sprinkles for a pop of colour.
- Fat Bombs. Add extra protein powder or almond flour to this high-protein frosting recipe until the keto frosting gets thick enough to roll it up into fat bombs.

Tips and Tricks
For a Different Consistency - The consistency of this frosting may vary depending on the type of protein powder you use. Pea and Casein protein powder will be thicker than whey protein powder. If you use different protein powders and your frosting ends up too thin and you want to thicken it, simply add more protein powder or almond flour. For a thinner consistency, add some heavy cream to thin the frosting. Make sure that you make any necessary changes BEFORE adding the chocolate chips as it is harder to mix the frosting once the chips have been added.
For Different Protein Powders - You may have to adjust the amount of protein powder to get the right consistency since they all have different amounts of thickening agents. Pea protein will make the thickest frosting whereas whey protein will be thinner and therefore may require more protein powder.
For Different Levels of Sweetness - EVERY protein powder has a different level of sweetness so feel free to adjust the amount in this recipe to suit your tastes. If you make a mistake and the keto frosting ends up too sweet for your taste buds, add some additional butter to mellow out the sweetness. Just make sure that you adjust the sweetened level before adding the chocolate chips as the mixture is harder to blend once the chips have been added. Again, the trick to this recipe is to taste the frosting as you add the ingredients and modify the recipe accordingly.
For a Nut-free Keto Version - You can replace the peanut butter with sunflower seed butter or tahini. Or, you can simply replace the peanut butter with more butter.

Recipe FAQs
How much frosting does this recipe make?
This recipe yields 3 cups which is enough Keto Cookie Dough Frosting to frost about 24 cupcakes or a 2-layer cake. Feel free to double this recipe if you want a lot of leftover frosting.
How do you store this keto frosting?
Keep the sugar-free cookie dough frosting in the refrigerator in an airtight container. When you’re ready to use it, let the frosting sit at room temperature for about 20 minutes to let it soften. This frosting will harden in the fridge and will soften significantly at room temperature (depending on how hot your house is!)
Can I make frosting with salted butter?
If you only have salted butter, you can still make this keto frosting recipe. I prefer unsalted because the level of salt in salted butter varies widely depending on the brand. Use good quality butter with a high-fat content for the most delicious results.
Can I make this ahead of time and freeze it?
Absolutely! This keto cookie dough frosting freezes extremely well. Feel free to make a big batch to stash any leftovers in the freezer. You can just grab a spoon and dig into the container, directly from the freezer, whenever a frosting craving takes hold! The frosting should last up to 3 months in an airtight container. If you are going to need it for frosting, let the frozen keto cookie dough frosting thaw in the fridge overnight before using. You’ll also want to let it soften at room temperature before piping it onto your cupcakes or cakes.
Can I use vanilla bean paste instead of vanilla extract?
Vanilla bean paste works beautifully in this frosting. 2 teaspoons of vanilla bean paste can be used in place of the vanilla extract.
Pro-Tip
Make sure that you keep tasting the frosting at all the different stages and adjust the recipe to suit your tastes. Also, although I used regular-sized sugar-free chocolate chips, I think smaller chocolate chips would work slightly better for frosting cakes and cupcakes.
