Knowing how succulent Chinese Barbecued Pork (A.K.A Char Siu) taste, but also at how "unhealthy" it can be, I decided to create a "healthier" Paleo Chinese Barbecued Pork recipe.  Simple ingredients and only a little "hand-on" time making this recipe perfect for any level of cook.

  • Total Time: 60 minutes
  • Yield: 10 servings 1x

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 4 lbs boneless pork butt, cut into strips with excess fat removed

For the Marinade:

  • 2 tbsp coconut sugar (replace with more date paste to keep the recipe Whole30)
  • 1/2 cup coconut aminos
  • 2 tbsp date paste
  • 1/4 cup white wine (omit for Whole30)
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp five spice
  • 1 tbsp sesame oil
  • 2 tbsp grated fresh ginger (from a 4-6 inch piece)
  • 3 medium cloves, minced

For the glaze:

  • 1/4 cup ketchup (use a Paleo and Whole30 approved ketchup)
  • 1/4 cup honey (replace with date paste for Whole30)

Instructions

Marinate the pork

  1. Slice the pork into even sections and poke each section of pork using a fork
  2. Prepare the marinade by combining all the ingredients and whisking them together
  3. Pour all but 1/2 cup of the marinade over the pork
  4. Place in the fridge for at least 30 minutes but longer (up to 4 hours) is preferred

Make the glaze

  1. In a small saucepan over medium heat, add the ketchup, honey and reserved 1/2 cup of marinade
  2. Cook the glaze on medium heat until syrupy and reduced to about 1 cup (about 4-6 minutes)

Grill the pork

  1. place oven rack to middle position and heat oven to 300 degrees F.  Line a rimmed baking sheet with aluminum foil and set a wire rack on top of it.
  2. Remove pork from marinade, allowing any excess marinade to drip off and place on baking rack
  3. Pour 1/4 cup of water into the bottom of the pan and cover the pan tightly with aluminum foil
  4. Cook pork for 20 minutes, remove foil and continue to cook the pork until the edges begin to brown, about 35-45 minutes depending on how thick your slices are
  5. Turn on broiler and broil until pork begins to caramelize (about 7-9 minutes)
  6. Remove the pan from oven and brush with glaze and place it back under the broiler for 3-5 minutes.
  7. Remove the pork from the oven, flip the pork over,  and broil the other side for 7-9 minutes
  8. Add the glaze to that side of the pork and broil again for 3-5 minutes.
  9. Cool for 10 minutes and slice into thin strips.
