What is Brown Butter?
Brown butter, also known as beurre noisette in French cuisine, is a culinary marvel prized for its nutty aroma and rich flavour. It is created through a simple yet transformative process where butter is gently heated until its milk solids caramelize, turning a deep golden-brown hue. This browning not only intensifies the butter's natural flavour but also infuses it with a delightful complexity reminiscent of toasted nuts. Brown butter adds depth and sophistication to a wide array of dishes, from baked goods like cookies and cakes to savoury delights such as pasta sauces and vegetables.
Keto Brown Butter Honey Cookies Ingredients
Here is the list of ingredients you will need to make these Keto Brown Butter Honey Cookies:
- Butter - You will need unsalted butter for this keto cookie recipe. Since we are going to be browning the butter, you do NOT need to pull the butter out ahead of time.
- Brown Sugar Substitute - I like to use Truvia Sweet Complete which contains zero sugar but has a hint of molasses flavour just like real brown sugar.
- Sugar-free Honey - My absolute FAVOURITE sugar-free honey is by ChocZero. If you can not order it online, you can replace the sugar-free honey with sugar-free maple syrup but your cookies will not have the "honey" flavour.
- Egg - You will need one large egg that has come to room temperature.
- Almond Flour - Look for Super-fine Almond flour. Almond meal will not produce the same texture as super-fine almond flour.
- Flaxseed meal - Flaxseed meal is simply ground flaxseeds.
- Baking soda, salt and flaky sea salt for the topping
Sugar-free Cookie Recipe Instructions
These sugar-free keto brown butter honey cookies are not only delicious but also guilt-free. Let's dive into the recipe!
Make the brown butter. Pour the brown butter into a large bowl and allow it to cool for about 10 minutes
Beat the sweetener and sugar-free honey into the brown butter for 1 minute. Add in remaining ingredients and beat until incorporated. Place the mixture in the fridge overnight.
Using a small cookie scoop, divide the dough into 16 cookies. Bake for 12-14 minutes or until the cookies begin to brown.
Hint - The cookies will be soft at first so leave them on the cookie sheet for at least 10 minutes moving them to a cooling rack to fully cool
Can I use regular honey instead of sugar-free honey?
Regular honey is high in carbohydrates and sugars, making it unsuitable for a keto diet. Keto honey substitutes are formulated to be low in carbs and sugars, making them a better option for keto-friendly recipes.
Are these cookies gluten-free?
Yes, most brown butter keto honey cookies are gluten-free since they use almond flour instead of wheat flour. However, it's essential to double-check all ingredients to ensure they are gluten-free if you have celiac disease or gluten intolerance.
How should I store brown butter keto honey cookies?
Store the cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week. You can also freeze them for longer storage. Allow them to come to room temperature or reheat them slightly in the microwave before serving if frozen.
Can I customize these cookies with additional sugar-free ingredients?
Yes, you can customize these cookies by adding ingredients like chopped nuts, sugar-free chocolate chips, or shredded coconut for extra flavour and texture. Just be mindful of any additional carbs these ingredients may add.

Delicious Keto Brown Butter Honey Cookies - Sugar-free
These Delicious Keto Brown Butter Honey Cookies are gluten- and sugar-free. With only a handful of ingredients and a couple of minutes, this sugar-free cookie recipe is not only one of my favourite cookie recipes but also super easy!
- Total Time: 0 hours
- Yield: 16 cookies 1x
Ingredients
- 1 stick butter, unsalted
- ¼ cup brown sugar substitute
- ¼ cup ChocZero sugar-free honey
- 1 egg
- 1 ½ cup almond flour
- ¼ cup flaxseed meal
- ½ tsp baking powder
- ¼ tsp salt
- flaky sea salt for topping
Instructions
- Place the butter in a pot over medium heat. Once melted, reduce the heat to low and allow the butter to just barely simmer. Cook until the milk solids that sink are golden brown, about 6 minutes. Pour the butter into a large mixing bowl. Add the brown sugar substitute and honey and stir to incorporate. Set aside to cool until the butter is still liquid, but not hot
- Add the egg and vanilla and beat until incorporated.
- Add the almond flour, flaxseed meal, baking powder and salt and beat until just incorporated.
- Place the cookie dough in the fridge, covered, overnight to firm.
- Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper.
- Using a small scooper, scoop 1 ½-tablespoon mounds onto the prepared baking sheets, being sure to leave distance in between the cookies.
- Bake until deeply golden brown, about 12-14 minutes. Remove from oven and sprinkle with flaky sea salt. Allow the cookies to rest on the baking sheets for 5 minutes. Move to a cooling rack to cool completely.
Notes
- Do not try to bake these cookies until after they have hardened. If you do don't leave these cookies overnight to firm and bake them right away, your cookies will end up VERY flat.
- Make sure you use baking POWDER and not baking SODA
- You can replace the sugar-free honey with sugar-free maple syrup but ONLY the type that is nice and thick.
